Students Honored for Essays Celebrating Influential Elders
Three sixth graders in the San Antonio, TX, area have been selected as the winners of a writing contest for outstanding essays about older adults who have inspired them and made a difference in their lives. The competition was sponsored by the K–12 Task Force of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE), the educational branch of The Gerontological Society of America, in partnership with the Center for Productive Aging at Towson University and the Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University of Ohio.
The students and their teacher will be recognized during AGHE’s 35th Annual Meeting and Educational Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 28, 2009, at the Crowne Plaza Hotel-Riverwalk in San Antonio. This conference provides a forum for professionals in the field of aging to present their work and share ideas about gerontological and geriatric education and training.
The winners are as follows:
First place: Ashley Roper for “Father Paulino”
Second place: Elise Williams for “Cattle and Spurs”
Third place: Savannah Goodwin for “Mrs. Rogers”
All three are students in Veronica Kereti’s class at Bradley Middle School. Honorable mentions were also awarded to McKenna Harris of Bradley Middle School and Sara Zamora of Nimitz Middle School.
After reading their essays aloud to a group of AGHE attendees, the inspirational older adults, parents, and school leaders, the winners will be guests of honor at a reception at the Crowne Plaza.
Complete meeting details are available at http://www.aghe.org.
