Meeting to Outline Effective Education About Aging as America’s Senior Population Grows

The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) — the educational branch of The Gerontological Society of America — will hold its 39th Annual Meeting and Educational Leadership Conference from February 28 to March 3 at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront in St. Petersburg, FL. Media representatives are invited to attend free of charge.

This conference provides a forum for professionals in the field of aging to present their work and share ideas about gerontological and geriatric education and training. The theme for 2013 is “Waves of Change: Charting the Course for Gerontology and Geriatrics Education.” Complete meeting details are available at www.aghe.org.

“Charting the Future: Assuring Relevance and Quality in Gerontology and Geriatrics Education While Higher Education is Under Siege”
Opening Plenary Session: Thursday, February 28, 6:30 p.m.
In this symposium, a panel of experts will provide short commentary on key issues of gerontology and geriatrics education, including competency-based education, the relevancy bridge between gerontology education and practice, leveraging impact through partnerships and evaluation, and a look at accreditation as a quality assurance mechanism. Members of the audience will then be invited to share their viewpoints, success stories, concerns, and recommendations for AGHE and its membership.

“Making Waves in Gerontology Education: In Remembrance of David A. Peterson (13th President)”
Past President’s Symposium: Saturday, March 2, 1:30 p.m.
Six past presidents of AGHE will make short statements regarding ways to move forward in making gerontology education a more visible and accepted component of higher education. These statements will provide the basis for the discussion of strategies to create a wave of change in educational institutions and in society at large to embrace increased knowledge and awareness of aging and the aged as a central component of a complete education.

“Bridging the Generations: An Important Older Person in My Life”
K-12 Committee Student Writing Contest Award Presentation: Saturday, March 2, 3:30 p.m.
The AGHE K-12 Committee is sponsoring a writing contest for middle school students in the St. Petersburg. The theme of the writing contest is “Bridging the Generations: An Important Older Person in My Life.” Finalists and their guests will be recognized at this special event.

“Global Aging: The Pan American Health Organization’s (PAHO) Educational Efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean”
Closing Plenary Session: Sunday, March 3, 11 a.m.
PAHO is leading the efforts of a 17-country Latin American and Caribbean educational consortia that has developed and implemented both a two-year master’s in Public Health and Aging in Spanish and an eight-month Public Health and Aging Specialization for health ministries in both Spanish and English. The comprehensive curriculum is competency-based and addresses the management of multiple chronic conditions, common diseases, health system delivery, health policy and healthy aging. This massive work force preparation effort speaks to the growth and diversity of the region’s population and the levels of economic development, socio-political systems and languages and ethnic variation and backgrounds. One half of the session will be devoted to a panel that will present the background and overview of the program, while the remaining half will be a facilitated discussion around key questions and issues.

The Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE) is the educational branch of The Gerontological Society of America, the nation’s oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to research, education, and practice in the field of aging. AGHE seeks to advance gerontology as a field of study at institutions of higher education through conferences, publications, technical assistance, research studies, and consultation with policy makers. It is currently the only institutional member organization dedicated to gerontology and geriatrics education worldwide.

Mildred M. Seltzer Distinguished Service Recognition

Presented to C. Joanne Grabinski, PhD, Eastern Michigan University, and Mary Alice Wolf, PhD, Saint Joseph University.

This award honors colleagues who are near retirement or recently retired. Recipients are individuals who have been actively involved in AGHE through service on committees, as elected officers, and/or have provided leadership in one of AGHE’s grant-funded projects.

Administrative Leadership Award

Presented to Tammy M. Bray, PhD, Oregon State University

This award honors administrators on AGHE member campuses who have made exceptional efforts in support of gerontology or geriatrics education.

David A. Peterson Gerontology & Geriatrics Education Best Paper of the Volume Award

Presented to Nina M. Silverstein, PhD, University of Massachusetts Boston; Elizabeth Johns, MS, University of Massachusetts Boston; and Judith A. Griffin, MA, MS, University of Massachusetts Boston, for the article “Students Explore Livable Communities.” Honorable mention is given to Emily J. Robbins, MS, Miami University; Jennifer M. Kinney, PhD, Miami University; and Cary S. Kart, PhD, Miami University, for the article “Promoting Active Engagement in Health Research: Lessons Learned from an Undergraduate Gerontology Capstone Course.”

The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in scholarship in academic gerontology in AGHE’s official journal, Gerontology & Geriatrics Education.

Graduate Student Paper Award

Presented to Deborah Gray, MBA, University of Massachusetts Boston, for the paper “Weight and Wealth: The Relationship between Obesity and Net Worth for Pre-Retirement Age Men and Women.”

This award acknowledges excellence in scholarly work conducted by an AGHE Annual Meeting student attendee.

Book Award for Best Children’s Literature on Aging

Presented to Caitlin Dale Nicholson and Leona Morinn-Nelson for “Niwechihaw/I help” in the primary reader (pre-K to 2nd grade) category, and Ann Grifalconi and Jerry Pickney for “Ain’t Nobody A Stranger to Me” in the elementary reader (3rd to 5th grade) category.

This award recognizes portrayals of meaningful aging in children’s literature.
