The observation and the analysis based on the following diagram lead us to develop this 2nd convention. Figure 1 – Adapted from ‘UN 2005’ This scientific event has as it's objective “ to walk in the path of the rainbow” of health, sickness, and in the diverse strategies of the aging process, aging, old age and dying with dignity. Aging gracefully is learned in the learning from life, it's about the internal dynamics of relational communication between body and mind, psyche and soma and spirit and soul; we hope with this event to find answers to all these uncertainties. Despite all scientific and technological advances the majority of investigators, scientists, gerontologists, doctors, nurses, psychologists, sociologists, etc., continue to attribute merit to the disease and not the person. Therefore, it becomes urgent to reflect upon and investigate the biology of both the individual and the illness. Transpersonal therapists know the value of the disease as a vicarious experience of being ill. Illness contributes to the change of behaviours and habits. Healing happens when madness is healing, that is, when there is sound interaction between mind and body, psyche-soma, and spirit and soul. We live in a global village where the population is aged and is aging at a hallucinating rhythm and this is profoundly modifying gerontological care. Aging is accelerated and unprecedented in Portugal, in Europe, on the African continent and in the rest of the world, causing profound implications to social, economic and political lives. Thus, there is an urgency to promote, in a holistic domain, an in depth study of the role of the aged and to treat/care for the elderly. We will in this congress dissect the aging theories, from genetic fatalism to factors of social detachment. The aging process is hampered by puzzles and paradigms dubbed with stochastic and deterministic theories. Both, search to beautify the soul so that on the day of our departure (passage) to another port (world), there be mercy where our heart is and that the body becomes the cult of metamorphosis and aging, having pride and respect for the wrinkles that engrave it of the aging from the 1st day of it's conception. What is in the mind is in the body. Our body functions as a panel of luminous instruments that mirror the problems of the soul and the mind through symptoms, which are printed as illness upon our bodies. Illness becomes a way of life when the mind that lies makes us mad to avoid madness, resulting in rage. The mind communicates psychologically and anatomically with the body through peptide molecules that are fabricated by the mind (brain) and by the immune system. Investigation in psycho-neuro immunology and psycho-oncology is encouraged in order to understand the feelings of chemistry that link the psyche to the soma. There are about 70 types of peptides and we are what we think. Thought communicates the production of serotonin, endorphins, interferon, cortisol, and others to the brain, which will in turn shape our behaviour. Welcome all. The President of the Congress Joaquim Parra Marujo OBJECTIVES In order to understand the feelings and or chemistry that connect the psyche to the soma of the aged, the 2nd International Gerontology and Geriatric Congress has as it's objective: -Become an event of reference in the areas of gerontology and Geriatrics. -Share unidisciplinary and transdisciplinary theories, experiences and knowledge in order to promote a prosperous and active life for the aged. -Launch investigation, training, innovation and technology aiming at the present and future expectations of the aged. -Promote the participation of socio-cultural and scientific nature of the universities, senior academia and institutions connected to the problematic of the “old”. -Promote proposals related to gerontology and geriatrics dealing with dependency and mobility -Publish a CD containing the minutes of the Congress registered on ISBN Scientific Commission Prof. Doutor Álvaro Rodriguez Díaz – Universidade de Sevilha Prof. Doutor Félix Talego – Universidade de Sevilha Prof. Doutor Horácio Saraiva - Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus Mestre Dr. João Beauclair - Prof. Doutor Joaquim Marujo – Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus Prof. Doutor Juan Maestre Alfonso – Universidade de Sevilha Prof. Doutor Luis Larcher - Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus Prof. Doutor Marcelino Lopes - UTAD Prof. Doutor Miguel Roiz Celix – Universidade Complutense de Madrid Prof. Doutor Pedro Orlando Rodrigues - Faculdade de Ciências Médicas, da Universidade Nova de Lisboa Prof. Doutor Salvador Rodriguez Becerra – Universidade de Sevilha Prof. Doutor Vitor da Fonseca - Escola Superior de Educação João de Deus Profª.
