Experts, Kathleen Puntillo, RN, DNSc, FAAN and Therese B. Cortez, MSN, NP, ACHPN, will outline the ethical and professional responsibilities of nurse participation; describe a successful communication education program to enhance skills; and detail essential concepts and resources to promote effective nurse involvement in patient and family discussions.

Learning Objectives: 

  • Describe potential nurse contributions in facilitating communication about prognosis and goals of care with specific emphasis on family meetings.
  • Identify resources that can help health care teams more fully integrate the nurse into palliative care discussions with patients and families.
  • Discuss the development, implementation and evaluation of a communication skills educational program for ICU nurses that can be applied to other practice settings, including: core communications skills; teaching strategies; communication skills toolkit; and methods to evaluate teaching-learning processes and outcomes.
