The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released today an ambitious draft National Plan to overcome Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.  The draft National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease offers specific action steps to accelerate research on treatment and prevention, as well as proposals for improving care, services, and support for patients, families, and caregivers. We look forward to receiving comments from the public on this proposed plan.

HHS is seeking comments on the draft National Plan to fully engage the Alzheimer’s disease community, the public, states, local governments, community based service organizations, the private sector and others in its development.  Public comment will be accepted through March 30, 2012 and should be e-mailed to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Topic: LGBT Older Adults
Posted: January 25, 2011

The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging is conducting a survey to gather input from a wide range of people on the website it is creating.  The site will provide educational information, training, and technical assistance to organizations and LGBT older adults on a variety of important issues related to LGBT aging.  The Center is the first federally-funded entity to address the needs of LGBT older adults.  Given this historic importance, your input to the design of the website is critical.  The information you provide will be used to help determine what content to include and how effective the Center is in reaching its intended audiences.  Your answers will be anonymous and will not be linked to you in any way.  However, if you wish to be contacted in the future, there will be an optional question at the end of the survey where you may provide contact information.

The deadline for completing the survey is February 6, 2011.  To access the survey, please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/lgbtagingcenter

The National Resource Center on LGBT Aging is a nationwide program of Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) and ten partner organizations (American Society on Aging; Brookdale Center for Healthy Aging and Longevity, Hunter College; CenterLink; FORGE Transgender Aging Network; GRIOT Circle; The LGBT Aging Project; National Association of Area Agencies on Aging; National Council on Aging’s National Institute of Senior Centers; Openhouse; and PHI).

If you have any questions about the survey, please send an e-mail to: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Center thanks you for your time and valuable input.

Topic: Fall Prevention
Posted: January 18, 2011

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) invites you to provide public comment on its draft recommendation statement on the prevention of falls in older adults. This is the first time since 1996 that the USPSTF is making a recommendation on this topic.

The opportunity to comment on this draft recommendations statement will be available from January 12 to February 9, 2011. Once the opportunity for public comment is posted, please review the draft recommendation statement and offer your comments at http://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/tfcomment.htm.  Please share this information with your colleagues and other groups and individuals that may be interested in providing comments on this topic.

The USPSTF is working to make its recommendations clearer and more useful. Opportunity for public comment is a new step as part of its ongoing effort to keep its work and methods clear to the public it serves.

The USPSTF is an independent panel of non-Federal experts in prevention and evidence-based medicine and is composed of primary care providers (such as internists, pediatricians, family physicians, gynecologists/obstetricians, nurses, and health behavior specialists).

The USPSTF conducts scientific evidence reviews of a broad range of clinical preventive health care services (such as screening, counseling, and preventive medications) and develops recommendations for primary care clinicians and health systems.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Mary Barton, M.D., USPSTF Scientific Director, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or (301) 427-1638.
