James C. Appleby, BSPharm, MPH, is GSA’s chief executive officer. He is an innovator and entrepreneur adept at transforming organizational cultures. Since joining the staff in 2008, he has focused the organization on advancing innovation in aging, and has built multiple non-dues revenue generating initiatives, including projects related to adult immunizations, over-the-counter medication taking behaviors, pain management, and several new publications. Prior to joining GSA, Appleby had a 17-year career with the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), where he served in a variety of roles before being appointed chief operating officer and senior vice president of business strategy and operations. In this capacity, he was responsible for managing APhA’s multiple business units and served as the organization’s senior executive responsible for relationships with the pharmaceutical, chain drug, and wholesaler industries. Prior to APhA, Appleby was on the faculty at the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, and he worked as a hospital pharmacist. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and a Master of Public Health degree from Temple University. He is a member of APhA, the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, the Washington DC Pharmacists Association, the American Geriatrics Society, and the American Aging Association. Appleby currently serves as Vice Chair of the District of Columbia Board of Pharmacy, and he formerly was GSA’s representative to the Institute of Medicine Forum on Aging, Disability, and Independence. He also was the chief staff member leading the development of the 21st IAGG World Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics, which GSA hosted in San Francisco in 2017.
