Senior Service America Senior Scholar Award and Junior Scholar Award for Research Related to Disadvantaged Older Adults

Senior Service America, Inc. offers two Awards for Research Related to Disadvantaged Older Adults: Senior Scholar Award and Junior Scholar Award. These awards acknowledge outstanding basic and applied research that advances knowledge and understanding of the capabilities, contributions, challenges and concerns of disadvantaged older adults, especially those who are low-income and minority group members.

Restrictions:  An awardee may not receive the same Award Level more than once, whether as sole or joint author.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be a member of GSA and have an accepted abstract.
  • An applicant (sole or first author) for the Senior Scholar Award must have 5 or more years of professional experience after receiving his/her terminal graduate degree (i.e., master’s degree or higher) at the time of abstract submission.
  • An applicant (sole or first author) for the Junior Scholar Award must have less than 5 years of professional experience after receiving his/her terminal graduate degree (i.e., master’s degree or higher) at the time of abstract submission.
  • To be considered for either Award, applicants must submit one of the following documents by the deadline:  1) an article-length manuscript, 2) a complete poster board, 3) a full PowerPoint presentation with narrative notes, or 4) a 750-1,000 word detailed abstract.
  • The submitted document must include the following details:  nature of the problem or issue and its relevance to disadvantaged elders, objectives of the research, methods (including data sources, sample sizes, types of analysis, etc.), results, and discussion or implications.
  • The research should directly or indirectly provide new or compelling information relevant to disadvantaged older adults, including but not limited to their capabilities, contributions, needs or well-being (e.g., physical, social, or emotional).
  • For purposes of these Awards, the term "disadvantaged" is broadly defined.  It includes but is not limited to factors such as low income, minority status (e.g., race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation), limited education, frailty, or poor health (physical or mental).
  • The research may  be in any substantive area, such as biological studies, socio-economic problems or trends, applied research/program evaluation, morbidity/mortality analyses, or any study that enhances our understanding of disadvantaged older adults, thereby promoting their well-being.

Nature of Award
The Senior Scholar Award includes a $1,000 cash prize and the Junior Scholar Award receives a $500 cash prize. Each award is presented at the recipient's respective GSA Section Business Luncheon Meeting.

Minority Issues in Gerontology Committee Outstanding Mentorship Award

The Minority Issues in Gerontology Committee Outstanding Mentorship Award recognizes individuals who have exemplified outstanding commitment and dedication to mentoring minority researchers in the field of aging.

Submission Deadline
March 31, 2018 

Requirements

  • Nominee must be a member of GSA.
  • Recipient will be expected to attend the Annual Scientific Meeting to receive the award.
  • A formal nomination letter that is no more than one (1) page.
    • This letter should describe the contributions of the nominee to the individuals he/she has mentored.
  • No more than three (3) letters of endorsement from individuals who have been mentored by the nominee.
    • These letters should provide specific information regarding the contributions of the nominee to the individual mentored.
  • A current Curriculum Vitae. Please include contact information.

Nature of Award
The recipient will recieve a plaque, and is recognized at the Minority Issues in Gerontology Award Presentation and Reception at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston MA.
