  • $1.3 billion in funding cuts proposed for appropriations subcommittee with spending jurisdiction over NIH, NIA

On July 15, House Appropriations Committee Chair Tom Cole (R-OK) issued a press release regarding the Fiscal Year 2026 federal budget. Cole announced that funding for federal agencies within the jurisdiction of the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH), would be cut by an estimated $1.3 billion.

Today, we're asking you to contact your member of the House of Representatives to express opposition to these cuts.

These top-line cuts present a significant risk for adequate funding of NIH and the National Institute on Aging (NIA). The cuts also create a critical window for GSA members to advocate for sustained funding for the ground-breaking research on diseases and disorders that impact us all as we age. It is crucial that the NIH and NIA continue their bold leadership in both intramural and extramural research. Sufficient funding is required to support the multidisciplinary research ecosystem from basic biology to translational research that contributes to our health spans.

Call Your Representatives in the House

We encourage you to take five minutes to call your member in the House of Representatives using this script to advocate for support in funding for NIH and NIA, including funding NIH at $51.3 billion and NIA at $4.75 billion.

Encourage your representative to continue to support the lifesaving research that contributes to more meaningful lives for all Americans.

We encourage you to make the call and share with colleagues, family, and neighbors. Dial 202-224-3121 and ask for your representative's office. Visit GSA's website for more advocacy tips.
