GSA Statement on Senate Continuing Resolution Language Affecting Federal Grants

Senate appropriators on both sides of the aisle have come to an agreement on a short-term government funding bill — a continuing resolution that includes a provision to delay implementation of a proposed rule from the White House Office of Management and Budget that would place political appointees in charge of approving federal grants.

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) appreciates the appropriators' efforts to ensure that federal grant funding is administered consistent with congressional intent. Federal grants and cooperative agreements support research, education, workforce development, public health, health care, aging services, and community-based programs that benefit people across the country.

Because the proposed rule affects funding across 42 federal agencies, its impact extends far beyond any single program or sector. A strong federal grants ecosystem helps academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, health systems, professional societies, and community organizations work in partnership with government to generate evidence, train the workforce, advance innovation, and deliver services.

As Congress continues its appropriations work, GSA encourages policies that promote transparency, stability, and broad participation in federally supported programs so that research, education, public health, and community services can continue to improve health and well-being for all of us as we age.
