This toolkit presents current information about the management of overweight and obesity and relevant resources are listed within each section. However, new approaches and tools are continually developed.
Users of this toolkit are encouraged to remain abreast of new information. Additionally, off-label uses of medications are not discussed in this toolkit; practitioners may need to seek additional information from other sources about these options.
Many resources are available that provide important information about how to manage obesity. GSA provides multiple resources that are relevant to primary care providers implementing the GSA KAER framework for older adults with overweight and obesity, at the Obesity and Overweight Learning Center.
American Academy of Physician Assistants Obesity Management in Primary Care—a professional development and certificate program for primary care providers.
American Association of Nurse Practitioners Obesity Community—provides nurse practitioners with an interactive community to connect with colleagues.
American College of Physicians Obesity Management Learning Series—provides continuing education and resources for physicians.
Obesity Care Advocacy Network—works to increase access to evidence-based obesity treatments by uniting key stakeholders and the broader obesity community around significant education, policy, and legislative efforts. Its website is an excellent resource for news and current information on efforts to improve coverage of obesity as a chronic, complex disease.
Obesity Care Week—strives to create a society that understands, respects, and accepts the complexities of obesity and values science and clinically based care and provides resources for health care providers, patients and those who care for them, policymakers, and employers.
National Academies Roundtable on Obesity Solutions—a project to address systems-wide changes to reduce the prevalence of obesity; provides dozens of publications and resources.
Rethink Obesity—An industry resource that provides educational resources about overweight and obesity for health care providers.
Stop Obesity Alliance—An initiative of the George Washington University Milken Institute School of Public Health that provides multiple resources, including the Weight Can’t Wait guide for the management of obesity in the primary care setting.
