Medications can play a significant and often overlooked role in a person’s weight trajectory. As part of a comprehensive assessment, it is important to review current and past medications to identify those that may contribute to weight gain, as well as to understand how they may be influencing a patient’s overall health and treatment goals.
Many of the conditions that are treated by these medications can potentially be managed by other medications that are weight-neutral or are associated with weight loss. For example, some antidiabetic medications such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) inhibitors are associated with weight loss and may be considered for patients with type 2 diabetes. If patients are using medications associated with weight gain, assess the medication regimen and patient conditions to determine if other alternatives might be preferable. Medications that are approved for weight loss are discussed in the Evaluate section.
