GSA Scientist-Citizen Storytelling Lab: We’ll Help You Step Up and Defend Science!

James Appleby - CEO Blog

GSA members are invited to apply for a unique opportunity this summer: the inaugural GSA Scientist-Citizen Storytelling Lab. Several of my recent columns and blogs have focused on the call GSA made to its members this year to step up and take on the role of scientist-citizens: individuals committed to proactive public engagement that improves understanding of science and policies that support all of us as we age.

This is an opportunity to apply your expertise defending the integrity and importance of science and ensuring the next generation of scholars is prepared to continue your work. If you’re willing to intentionally step into a larger role, GSA’s new program will enable you to use digital channels to effectively tell your story, advocate for science-based policy, and stand up for expertise in moments that matter.

The GSA Scientist-Citizen Storytelling Lab is designed to help members translate their expertise into accessible, engaging public-facing digital communications. This is a critical activity at a time when science is being challenged on many fronts.

The program will enable participants to navigate today’s media landscape by building practical skills in messaging, audience engagement, digital storytelling, and content creation. You will learn to go from simply sharing information to changing perceptions, building trust, and helping communities make informed decisions.

The time commitment is expected to be 20-26 hours over the course of the 8-10 weeks. There is no cost to participate. This opportunity is open to GSA members from all disciplines, backgrounds, geographies, and career stages who are interested in helping shape how the public understands science and aging. Applications are due on Friday, June 5. GSA will be your partner in standing up for science!
