With Careers in Aging Month 2026 a Success, Resources Live Online Year-Round

James Appleby - CEO Blog

Congratulations and thank you to everyone who participated in Careers in Aging Month this March! Each year, GSA and its partners help individuals, educational institutions, and organizations in their roles as advocates and influencers for careers in aging.

I was especially grateful for the opportunity to participate in Careers in Aging Month activities when I joined GSA President Tamara Baker, PhD, FGSA, for a visit to Bethune-Cookman University.

Tamara has made support for the next generation of gerontologists a priority during her presidency. She hosted an online, interactive discussion with GSA’s elected section chairs on March 26, titled “Explore the Interdisciplinary Power of Your Major: Aging & Gerontology Panel.” The recordings of this program and other career-related webinars are available on-demand on GSA Enrich.

A new feature GSA rolled out in 2026 is our Careers in Aging ProFiles video series. To help expose people to the many exciting career paths in aging, each profiled participant answers the same three questions, allowing viewers to easily compare roles and learn about the variety of opportunities available. This series is relevant for high school and college students as well as professionals considering a transition into aging-related work. We will continue to add to the series.

It’s through our focus on students during Careers in Aging Month that I came to know CareYaya, a firm with an interesting model that engages college students as care providers for older individuals. Those in pre-med, pre-nursing, and similar majors get a chance to engage with older people while also earning a wage. It is our shared hope that this early experience will lead them to pursue careers in gerontology or geriatrics.

And join me in thanking the many organizations who partner with us in making Careers in Aging Month possible: GSA’s Academy for Gerontology in Higher Education Advancement Workgroup; the American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living; Argentum; the Erickson School of Aging Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; HOSA Wisconsin: Future Health Professionals; LeadingAge; LeadingAge Kansas; GSA’s National Center to Reframe Aging; and Northwood Technical College.

Please save the date for the next Careers in Aging Month in March 2027! GSA’s website has many resources to jump-start the planning for activities at your campus or institution.
