The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) has received renewed grant support to welcome a 17th class of reporters for the Journalists in Aging Fellows Program. The current funders include Silver Century Foundation, The John A. Hartford Foundation, The Commonwealth Fund, National Institute for Health Care Management Foundation (NIHCM), and Health Foundation for Western & Central New York. Applications are due July 24.

The Gerontological Society of America (GSA) will debut a virtual event format called GSA Forum with Connecting Health Care, Public Health, and Community for Dementia Detection and Care, taking place June 16 and 17. New research published in The Journals of Gerontology, Series B: Psychological Sciences and Social Sciences has found that taking part in musical activities improves thinking and mental well-being in healthy older adults. 

Blood tests measuring the aging of certain white blood cells can predict cognitive and mood-related symptoms of depression, rather than physical symptoms. 

The same molecules that predict mortality in dogs do so in humans, according to a study published today in The Journals of Gerontology, Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences.  The finding adds to a growing body of evidence that “dogs are the closest representation of human aging that anybody’s ever found,” said Ben Harrison, PhD, a senior scientist at the University of Washington School of Medicine and lead author on the paper.
