Treatment of Obesity Must Be Multifaceted, GSA Publication Says

According to “Insights & Implications in Gerontology: The Chronic Disease of Obesity” — a new publication from the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) — overweight and obesity are now recognized as chronic health conditions with specific pathophysiologic causes, with complications if these conditions are not addressed, and with treatments that are safe and effective. And for most older adults, treating overweight and obesity can add years to their lifespan and quality to the years of life when they are healthy.

Howe Takes Office as the Gerontological Society of America’s President

Judith L. Howe, PhD, MPA, FGSA, FAGHE, of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Bronx VA Geriatrics Research, Education and Clinical Center has been installed as the new president of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), the nation’s largest interdisciplinary organization devoted to the field of aging. She was elected by GSA’s membership, which consists of 5,500 researchers, educators, practitioners, and other professionals.

The Resource Centers for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) represent a long-standing program established by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to support behavioral and social research in the areas of aging, health disparities in older adults, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) through the development of research infrastructure and the mentorship of early career scientists from diverse backgrounds, including, but not limited to, individuals from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral research, individuals with disabilities, and women. RCMAR Centers have a long track record of supporting the study of aging in diverse communities, which is a core component of the RCMAR mission.
